Story:

John and Gwen are in a restaurant in the aftermath of some traumatic relational developments. John has discovered that his wife’s unborn child may not be his. John confronts her to learn the truth; they are not on the same page, will they be able to imagine their way towards each other? Souls That Balance wrestles directly with themes of fidelity, identity, sexuality, love, legacy, life and loss.

Structure:

The film has three distinct elements.

1] The primary story is set in a restaurant in one evening. It plays out in the present tense, chronologically.

2] A second nonlinear narrative weaves in and out of the restaurant conversation. This second narrative is a combination of backstory as told to the viewer; characters' memory — both subjective and objective; and the resulting images of their imaginations. It relates directly to the restaurant dialogue. It is mostly past tense but breaks into the present at times as well.

3] A third visual level is a surreal, exegetical motif that blurs the lines between the two categories above. This motif mixes together objective experience, subjective interpretation, and metaphorical imagery. It serves to interpret or mediate the internal world of the characters, and their imaginations, to the imagination of the viewer.
